State Bank of India management told analysts on 3 November 2026 that its digital re-KYC initiative had completed more than 1.2 crore updates since June and reduced branch intervention by over 50%. The bank estimates the change saves around 50,000 employee hours daily; these are management-reported measures, not independently audited labour-time figures.
SBI’s update from the quarterly call
In its 3 November 2026 quarterly results interaction, State Bank of India management said more than 1.2 crore re-KYC updates had been processed digitally since the initiative began in June. According to the published call transcript, direct branch intervention for this work has dropped by more than half.
The bank estimated that avoiding repeat manual interactions saves roughly 50,000 employee hours each day. The Economic Times’ HR publication separately reported these figures on 4 November. They should be understood as management’s operational estimates rather than independently measured time records for every branch.
How branch work is changing
Re-KYC is the periodic process of confirming and updating customer information in line with applicable identification and monitoring requirements. Allowing eligible customers to complete parts of the process digitally can reduce footfall, document handling and repetitive assistance at branches.
SBI says the capacity released through such initiatives can be redirected towards customer relationships and business generation. Management also described the Seva Sarathi support programme, with over 9,500 facilitators helping customers at busy branches to use routine services. That deployment figure is about an operating initiative; it does not establish a new permanent bank recruitment count.
What it means for SBI employees
Employees handling account maintenance, customer service and KYC may see a change in the mix of requests arriving at their branches. The actual effect will vary by local internet access, customer digital readiness, verification requirements and exceptions that still need in-person handling.
Digital re-KYC does not remove the bank’s duties to verify information or handle risk flags. It also should not be interpreted as a promise of lower staff targets, revised working hours or job reductions: no such policy decision follows from these reported productivity numbers.
Questions that still need evidence
The public discussion does not provide independent branch-level working-hour records, a bank-wide employee-survey result or a formal instruction reallocating the saved time. Readers should therefore separate aggregate management claims from any changes to their individual service conditions.
The useful next check will be documented branch procedures, customer experience measures and whether the reported operational gains translate into sustained staffing and workload improvements.
